We need your continued help to protect the freedom of bookmakers to provide gaming machines in high street betting shops.
With increased media and political scrutiny, the Association of British Bookmakers (ABB) wants to express concern at some of the inaccuracies being reported about our nation’s betting shops and electronic gaming machines.
Much of the media coverage wrongly accuses the industry of targeting deprived areas and claims that machines are highly addictive. Many are making accusations based on anecdotal evidence and half-truths.
Gaming machines are a healthy part of the betting mix alongside traditional forms of betting such as horse racing and sports.
As an industry we recognise that some individuals do get into difficulties with gambling. That is why we are working alongside government to implement voluntary limits and mandatory alerts as part of a new code for player protection and responsible gambling.
However, we shouldn’t forget that problem gambling in the UK remains low, at less than 1%. In fact, the 2012 Health Survey for England has also helped to show that problem gambling has actually fallen by as much as 40% since 2010.
Your help is required; write to your local MP and ask them to sign Early Day Motion (EDM) 961. The EDM recognises the importance of the sector and calls on the Government to continue to pursue an evidence-based approach to this issue.
