What is ABB?

ABB is the leading trade association representing high street ('off-course') bookmakers in Great Britain.

Our Objective

The ABB's objective is to help create and sustain conditions in which socially responsible betting shop operators can compete and prosper.

Who are our members?

Our membership covers the spectrum of bookmakers operating in Great Britain, including:

- 'independents' (sole traders, partnerships and small/medium sized chains);
- and national chains.

We have more than 200 independents in membership. Together our members operate more than 7,000 licensed betting offices, more than 80% of the total.

History (BOLA/BBOA)

The ABB was created in October 2002 following the merger of the British Betting Office Association (BBOA), representing independent bookmakers, and the Betting Office Licensees Association (BOLA), whose membership included the large bookmaking chains.

Council /voting structure

The full Council of the ABB comprises:

  • Chairman, Warwick Bartlett (Bartlett's Bookmakers)
  • Vice-Chairman, Christopher Bell (Ladbrokes)
  • Neil Goulden (Gala Coral)
  • David Harding (William Hill)
  • Howard Chisholm (Chisholm Bookmakers)
  • Michael Corbett (Corbett Bookmakers)
  • Fred Done (Done Brothers Cash Betting Ltd)
  • Charles Needham (Tremayne Bookmakers)
  • Will Roseff (Backhouse Racing)

  • Alan Ross (Ladbrokes)
  • Ian Spearing (William Hill)
  • Nick Rust(Coral)

The large bookmaker chains - Ladbrokes, William Hill, Coral - each have two votes on the Council, giving them six votes in all. The independents also have six votes. A two-thirds majority is required to carry a motion, preventing either side from imposing their will on the other. Most ABB decisions are by consensus and where there are differences either the large bookmakers have to recruit some support from the independents, or vice versa, to carry a vote.
